1926

The Berkshire Place Hotel opens, designed by Warren & Wetmore as part of the visionary Terminal City plan surrounding Grand Central Terminal. Its elegant façade and sophisticated interiors immediately set a new standard for luxury, attracting discerning travelers seeking style, comfort, and convenience in the heart of Manhattan.

Late 1920s–1930s

1942

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein meet at the hotel, sparking the collaboration that will bring Oklahoma! to the stage and forever transform American musical theater. The Berkshire becomes an incubator for creativity, where inspiration and innovation quietly shape history within its elegant walls.

1978

Dunfeys Hotel Corporation purchases the property, initiating a new era of ownership and strategic vision. This transition lays the groundwork for revitalization, ensuring the hotel’s historic charm will continue to shine for future generations of guests.

1979

The hotel receives a $9.5 million renovation, restoring its grandeur while updating guest spaces for modern comfort. Plush fabrics, elegant furnishings, and thoughtful design details honor the hotel’s past while offering a refreshed, luxurious experience.

1988

Hong Kong–based Wharf Holdings acquires Omni Hotels, including the Berkshire, expanding the brand’s international reach. The acquisition brings new resources and global vision, strengthening the hotel’s position as a premier New York City destination.

1995

A complete restoration—exceeding $70 million—elevates and preserves the hotel’s architectural and historical elements. Every corridor, lobby, and suite is carefully restored, blending timeless elegance with modern luxury, making the Berkshire both a historical treasure and a contemporary sanctuary.

1996

TRT Holdings acquires Omni Hotels, committing to ongoing investment in the brand’s heritage properties. The Berkshire benefits from this stewardship, ensuring that its iconic presence and storied past are meticulously maintained while embracing modern amenities.
