The New Orleans Saints may have only been to—and won—one Super Bowl (Super Bowl XLIV in 2009), but the city of New Orleans has hosted this rodeo more than any other city. The Crescent City was host to the NFL Championship a total of seven times: The former Tulane Stadium, the Saints’ home field from 1967 to 1974, hosted three of the first nine Super Bowls in 1970, 1972 and 1975; and Mercedes Benz Superdome (originally Louisiana Superdome) hosted four more in 1990, 1997, 2002 and 2013.
An icon of New Orleans, Mercedes Benz Superdome is home of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Bayou Classic, Essence Festival, and many other big events each year. The Dome opened in 1975 in downtown New Orleans and remains the largest fixed dome, steel-constructed structure in the world, 27 stories at its peak and covering 13 acres of open space. An $85-million renovation was completed in 2010, adding new club level seating, all new seats, and improved sight lines and concessions areas. It also launched the 90,000-square-foot Champion Square, an outdoor venue between the Superdome and Smoothie King Center (the former New Orleans Arena) that hosts tailgating, festivals and concerts throughout the year.
Things to Know Before You Visit The Mercedes Benz Superdome
- The Superdome is approximately 10 blocks from the start of the French Quarter at Canal Street. Check out the activities at Champion Square and pre-game tailgating area spanning Loyola Avenue, starting at the Rouse’s Market on Girod Street and stretching to Poydras Avenue to the North.
- There are several casual restaurants along the way. The most upscale of these is Borgne at the Hyatt Hotel, a concept by Chefs John Besh and Brian Landry showcasing the bounty of Lake Borgne, where the two grew up fishing. Another Besh restaurant, Johnny Sanchez, is located a few blocks away on Poydras Street, along with Reginelli’s, where you’ll find pizzas, pasta and calzones.
- Just across Podyras is one of New Orleans’ top sports bars, Walk-Ons Bistreaux & Bar, an outpost of a local chain serving burgers, salads and Louisiana eats. Other great spots to celebrate gameday include Manning’s, located in Fulton Alley at the foot of Poydras; and Deanie’s Seafood just inside the Quarter at Iberville and Dauphine Streets. Also in the Quarter, Huck Finn’s on Decatur features multiple TV screens to watch sports, Johnny White’s on St. Peter is a relaxed hangout for Saints fans and motorcycle enthusiasts, and The Jimani on Chartres features over 100 beers, trivia, a jukebox and pub fare.
